Which water town near Shanghai should you go to?

They are all about ninety minutes out and some are twenty minutes from each other, so distance is not the thing that decides it.

The short answer

If you are going to one canal town and you want it to still be a town people live in, go to Tongli. If what you are trying to avoid is crowds, go to Jinxi. If you have heard of Zhouzhuang and that is the one you came for, go to Zhouzhuang — it is the famous one, and that is a real reason.

What none of them is, is far. Working out which one fits the day matters more than working out how to get there.

Pick by what you want out of the day

  • If you want

A town that is still a town

    Our answerTongli

Thirty-eight of its courtyard houses are Ming or Qing and people still live in them. It is bigger and more complete than the towns it gets compared to, and those are its own arguments rather than a consolation for being less famous.

What it costs you: It is the busiest of the ones we guide. Half a day covers the town, but not the town and the garden.

  • If you want

The lowest number of other visitors

    Our answerJinxi

Zhouzhuang is twenty minutes north and takes the crowds. Jinxi could not compete on fame, so it offered cheap space to private collectors instead and filled its old houses with small museums. That decision is why the streets are empty.

What it costs you: There is less of it. Two to three hours and you have seen the town, after ninety minutes in the car each way.

  • If you want

One thing inside the day that is worth the trip on its own

Our answerTongli, for the Retreat and Reflection Garden

It is the only World Heritage garden outside the city of Suzhou, it is inside the town, and the town's combined ticket already covers it. People buy a second ticket at its gate every day because they assume it is separate.

What it costs you: Allow two and a half hours for the garden alone. Adding it turns a half day into a full one.

  • If you want

A canal town and Suzhou in the same day

    Our answerTongli

Tongli is eighteen kilometres from the Suzhou old city. The other towns near Shanghai are not near Suzhou, so pairing them means driving back out the way you came.

What it costs you: Two places in a day means the shorter version of both. The garden is the first thing that gets cut, and it is the thing you came for.

Distance is not the variable

Every canal town people ask us about sits between one and one and a half hours from central Shanghai, and several of them are twenty minutes from each other. Choosing by travel time sorts them into an order that is almost flat.

What actually separates them is what each town did when tourism arrived. One of them got the fame. The others could not compete with that, so they went other ways — one filled its houses with other people's collections, another had already been left poor enough by geography that nothing got rebuilt.

That is the axis worth choosing on, and it is the one no ticket page will tell you about.

The mistake that costs the day

Two towns twenty minutes apart reads on a map like two towns you can do in one day. You can. What you get is the short version of two places that are variations on each other, instead of one place at the speed it was built for.

The version of this that hurts most is Tongli plus a second town. Tongli's garden needs about two and a half hours, so the second town is paid for out of the garden, and the garden was the reason to pick Tongli.

If you have two days and want two towns, put them on different days with something else in between.

Go early, and the crowd question answers itself

Tongli is quietest before ten in the morning. That is earlier than a day trip from Shanghai usually leaves, which is most of why people find it busy.

A car leaving Shanghai at seven thirty puts you in the town ahead of the coaches. The same town at nine and at noon is not the same visit, and no amount of choosing a quieter town gets you as much as leaving earlier does.

Why we will not tell you the famous one is a mistake

Our guides work to a rule about this: when a guest asks which of two places is better, the answer is that they are different. It is not diplomacy. A guest asking the question has often already been to the other one, and telling them they chose wrong is not a service anyone is paying for.

So this page routes rather than ranks. Tell us what you are trying to get out of the day and there is a clear answer. Ask which town is best and there is not one, and anybody who gives you one is selling the one they have a contract with.

Questions people ask

Which water town is closest to Shanghai?

Zhujiajiao, which is inside Shanghai's own Qingpu District rather than out in Jiangsu. We do not guide it, so we have nothing checked to tell you about what it is like now. The towns we do guide are around ninety minutes out.

Can I visit two water towns in one day?

Physically yes — some are twenty minutes apart. It is usually the wrong call. You end up with the compressed version of two places that resemble each other, and the first thing cut is whatever was worth the drive.

Is Tongli better than Zhouzhuang?

They are different. Zhouzhuang is the famous one and takes several million visitors a year. Tongli is larger, more of it is lived in, and it has a World Heritage garden inside the combined ticket. If you are choosing on crowds, that is the difference that will decide it.

Do I need to book a water town in advance?

It varies by town and it changes, so the dated answer for each one is on its own page rather than here. Jinxi's museums are bought on arrival. Tongli sells one combined ticket that already covers the garden, which is the one people most often pay for twice.

Is a water town worth a whole day from Shanghai?

For Tongli with its garden, yes, and half a day will not fit it. For a town you are visiting to walk through, half a day and an early start is the better shape, and the afternoon is better spent on something that is not another canal.
