Shanghai + Suzhou + Hangzhou in 3 Days

This is the classic Yangtze Delta loop, and high-speed rail is what makes it fit into three days — roughly an hour between each stop. Shanghai supplies the skyline, Suzhou the classical gardens and canal lanes, Hangzhou the lake and tea country. One direction, no backtracking.

Getting between cities
All legs by high-speed rail, roughly 1 hour each (Shanghai → Suzhou 30 min, Suzhou → Hangzhou 1.5 hr).

Before you set the days

Walking and access

Three consecutive full days and two rail transfers make this the most active route in the set. Travel with luggage you can move through stations without losing the first stop.

Rain

There is little room to move whole days. Protect the Suzhou garden with its covered corridors, use Shanghai's indoor alternatives, and reserve the clearest hours for West Lake and tea country.

Closures

A Monday affects the Suzhou museums but not the scheduled garden day. Timed entries and weather-dependent boats should be checked city by city rather than as one booking task.

If the plan changes

If a garden slot or boat fails, substitute within the same district and keep the next train. Backtracking across a city is what makes this compact loop stop working.

Day 1 — Shanghai in One Day, Puxi Side

    The Bund at Opening Hour

    On the waterfront before the crowds — an early start, because this is the only day the loop spends in Shanghai

    Shanghai Museum

    Yu Garden & Bazaar

    Ten minutes' walk from the museum, and the one classical garden you'll see inside a modern city rather than beside a canal

    • Jade Buddha Temple — One of Shanghai's most active Buddhist temples, featuring exquisite jade statues
    • Huxinting Teahouse — Iconic zigzag-bridge teahouse in the heart of Old City

    Xiaolongbao at the original 1900s shop, in the bazaar — no detour needed

    • Old City Street Food — Snack your way through the bazaar lanes instead of sitting down

    French Concession Walk

    Plane trees, art deco blocks and garden villas — the half of Shanghai that isn't skyline, and it's all on this side of the river

    • Fuxing Park — French-style garden with afternoon leisure and plane-tree shade

    Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street

    Cut back east through the neon on foot — it ends at the Bund, where the evening walk begins

    • Lujiazui Night Lights — Watch the Pudong towers light up from a riverside terrace
  7. 19:30

    Bund Night Walk

    A local guide walks you along the Bund after dark — the lit-up Pudong skyline, the historic waterfront façades, and the stories behind them. English-led, max 8 guests. Ends 20:30, ahead of tomorrow's 08:30 train.
